If you didn't know this already I am a major fan of Writer Director M. Night Shyamalan ! I have read some blogs that give a poor rating to his new film The Happening and I will tell you that if you are either looking for a mind numbing horror flick or are over thinking the fact that this is a STORY you may not have had the increadible experience that I had last night at the late Friday the 13th showing.
This movie was everything I had been looking forward to it being! Hilarious first and for most in the same smart way only Shyamalan is. There was the unique love story there typically is in his thrillers and of course the suspense, shock, and inevitable twist. That was 91 minutes of pure pleasure! I have been super stressed and nothing the doctor prescribes can bring that much relief!
True to his story telling method there are many different stories running through the main plot as well as tons of underlying meanings. The questions this movie asks are about human connections as well as our connection to this planet. Some find it a ridiculous thought that our existence is a fragile balance within this world between humans and nature. I guess ignorance IS bliss. As the story unfolds it reminds that our fear of each other over rides the threat to ourselves. Brilliant.
Mark Whalberg was a perfect pick for the lead character. When it came to Shyamalan's subtle humor Whalberg played it flawlessly. The ENTIRE theater would explode with laughter, genuine unstoppable belly laughing. It wasn't just the line but the delivery! "What, No" I am still giggling.
Shyamalan always gets me with the lead up to a jarring moment. Even though I knew it would be coming he still pulled it off. It was the scene where Wahlberg is puzzled by the old ladies creepy doll and the doll fills the entire screen and then boom the angry, creepy old lady out of no where. AAAHHH, I can't even control it. The scream comes out of me with out my consent. I don't think I was the only one and you could feel the energy from the shock in the room.
The love story in this film was quirky and endearing. The need between the two lead characters for each other along with the test of their true feelings is true to Shyamalan realistic view of romance.
I predict this movie will go down in movie history as a classic if you don't see it your missing out on one of the greatest experiences our time has to offer.
